Deputy Rusty Breland, a seven-year veteran of the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office was recognized by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1809 in Monroe for life-saving actions taken by him at an automobile accident. He received the award Saturday at their annual banquet.

Deputy Breland is credited with saving the life of a driver in a two-vehicle crash on May 11, 2022. While on patrol, Dy. Breland observed a two-vehicle crash on T-John Road in West Monroe. One of the vehicles ignited on impact with the driver injured and pinned inside. Dy. Breland was able to act quickly, freeing the driver and moving her to safety while the vehicle continued to burn with fire spreading in the engine and passenger compartments. The Ouachita Parish Fire Department arrived and was able to extinguish the fire.  The driver was transported to the hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Visiting her the following day to check on her condition, she expressed her appreciation to him saying she would not be alive if it were not for him rescuing her.

“Due to his quick thinking and reacting, with total disregard for his own safety, there is no doubt the actions taken by Deputy Breland were life-saving”-Sheriff Jay Russell.

Deputy Breland is currently assigned the Patrol Division and has received several letters of commendation during his career. Prior to joining OPSO, he served in the U. S. Army.

We appreciate the Veterans of VFW Post 1809 for recognizing Deputy Breland and their continued support of the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office.
